Teledyne FLIR shows bird migration spectacle at Hula Lake Park, Israel

Spring brings enchanted days to Israel’s Hula Lake. Around that time, bird migration is in full swing, and all types of birds are searching for a place to land somewhere in the nature reserve on their long journey from Africa to Europe. Thanks to technology from Teledyne FLIR, you can now follow this yearly nature spectacle from the convenience of your home.

The Hula Nature Reserve is a site of worldwide importance for water birds and the most important wet habitat in the Middle East. The reserve is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Israel, due to the fact that it is located along one of the most important bird migration routes in the world.

Camera network

To enable the general public, visitors and bird watchers to enjoy the beauty of the visiting birds, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF), the nature reserve’s curators, decided to install a network of cameras at various locations in the park. The technology now allows anyone to follow the live stream and look at nature with their own eyes, all from the couch at home. The organization used ultra-high-resolution security cameras from Teledyne FLIR, specifically the FLIR Quasar™ 4K IR PTZ Cameras with 31x optical zoom functionality.

It took the organization three years to complete this sophisticated project. KKL-JNF installed more than 10 Ultra HD super-zoom cameras, which feature superb image quality, to get a glimpse of the beauty of nature. Bird enthusiasts can now follow live streams from cameras located at eight different points in the nature reserve.

Spectacle of nature

Every migration season, in fall and spring, more than a billion migratory birds pass through the Hula Valley. A total of about 300 different species of birds have been observed in the valley. The reedbed serves as a resting place and a source of food for these migratory birds on their long journey to Africa.

Looking at the live streams, you can see the landing site of the tens of thousands of cranes that stay at Hula Lake Park and gather there to roost during the migration seasons. You can watch the feeding of cranes, the famous courtship dance and other occasional guests. A live camera overlooks the lagoon, populated with many birds and aquatic plants. Bird watchers can observe, among other things, the activity of cormorants, kingfishers and more. Another camera will point you towards the living areas of the growing herd of chamois in Hula Lake Park, grazing in peace. They are accompanied by white-bellied herons, cattle egrets, cranes and many more.
